Patrolling Bass Strait

22 April 1984

Patrolling Bass Strait Easter 1984 aboard HMAS Bayonet (Attack Class), turned out to be a harrowing experience as we were pounded by big seas in transit to Tasmania. Our skipper LCDR Graham Smethurst RANR (Divisional Officer HMAS Lonsdale) was an experienced merchant seaman (BHP Ships Captain) and saved the day and all of us. The crew was so battered by the experience we dropped anchor at Deal Island in Bass Strait and took turns to go ashore to settle everyone's nerves. See Archives Documents Letter from Adam Wolfe recounting the adventure.
