Maria dos Anjos Hornay da Castro Silva Vidigal de Castro

Shane Stone served as Minister for Ethnic Affairs in the Northern Territory for the duration of his parliamentary career. In that capacity, he became well acquainted with Maria dos Anjos Hornay da Castro Silva Vidigal de Castro. Originally from the Portuguese colony of Timor (Timor Portugues), having endured the Japanese occupation during WWII and the civil unrest before Indonesian annexation, she moved to Darwin in 1975. Over the following 5 decades, Maria embraced the Northern Territory, became the Honorary Consul for Portugal, and worked tirelessly in support of the Timorese Portuguese Social Club. She was an exceptional advocate for her community. At her funeral, officiated by the Catholic Bishop of the Northern Territory, the Most Reverend Charles Gauci, messages of Condolence from the President and Prime Minister of East Timor were read. The Territory Government was represented by the current NT Minister for Ethnic Affairs, the Hon Jinson Anto Charls MLA.
