Media Coverage of numerous issues ranging from High Court Wik Decision to Federal Election Pre-selections to euthanasia and federal intervention

23 December 1996

Two days out from Xmas a snapshot of the types of media coverage back when Channel 8 (9), ABC, Imparja, and Channel 7 provided a local news service. Various media items ranged from the High Court Wik decision ruling that Native Title rights could co-exist with pastoral leases. Also issues around pres-election in both ALP and CLP. Controversy over the selection of former Federal Member Warren Snowdon defeating Trish Crossin raised issues of gender equity. NLC Chairman Galarrwuy Yunupingu declared Parliament was no place for a woman. Also ongoing issues around Euthanasia and the workability of the legislation. Shane Stone never took any Christmas leave during his tenure as Chief Minister as evidenced by this sample media clip. Mindful of cyclone season he set an example that was not generally followed by his successors.
