A snapshot of the types of media coverage back when Channel 8 (9), ABC, Impaja and Channel 7 provided a local news service. Issues ranged from teacher's pay disputes, firearms, and ongoing discussions with the Howard Government over Statehood and general legislation. A particularly serious and unprecedented matter was the shootout with a rampaging gunman in Palmerston where 4 police and a civilian were gunned down. On Defence matters Chief Minister Shane Stone campaigned relentlessly for expanded ADF facilities in the 'top end' rather than US Marine deployments.
