Senate Estimates Opening Statement 2020-21

20 October 2019

The Opening Statement to Senate Estimates Committee touches on the Bushfire Royal Commission, drought, and flood. Shane Stone also made reference to RIC,  Importantly he highlighted evidence to the Royal Commission that any Commonwealth Disaster Agency should be a one-stop organization. On the election of the Albanese Labor Government, the functions of NRRA were merged with EMA to create the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) which came into existence on September 1, 2022. Shane Stone thereafter retired as the Co-Ordinator General of the National Recovery and Resilience Agency and Mr. Brendan Moon AM was appointed incoming Co-Ordinator General of NEMA. Shane Stone supported this new machinery of government save he considered the move to Home Affairs away from Prime Minister & Cabinet as a retrograde step downgrading the importance of natural disasters at a federal level.
