Correspondence from Tony Staley AO

February 2007

Letter from Tony Staley AO following his Award of Officer Order of Australia on Australia Day 2007. Tony Staley held the Victorian seat of Chisholm from 1970 to 1980 and served as Minister for the Capital Territory (1976–1977) and Minister for Posts and Telecommunications (1977–1980) in the Fraser Government. Post Parliament he later served as Federal president of the Liberal Party from 1993 to 1999 followed by Shane Stone. Prime John Howard and Tony Staley actively recruited Shane Stone once they became aware that Shane was wanting to retire as Northern Territory Chief Minister. Staley and Stone played a critical role in the accession and endurance of the Howard Government over 4 terms. Tony offered two reflections on Shane Stone ''..there are very few people to whom I would have handed on the Presidency'' and, ''...your splendidly direct way.... contributed to our continued success''.
