NT News 'Shane Stone's Dog Bit me'

15 March 1996

An account published in the NT news concerning Chief Minister Shane Stone's dog Sharka alleged to have bitten a 'delivery man' attempting to access the Stone family letter box. A largely fabricated and misleading report. The journalist concerned had the correct facts before filing his story but chose not to report accurately. The so-called 'delivery man' was a pamphlet dropper for the ALP who had a habit of running a stick up and down and across the front fence to attract the attention of the Stone family dog Sharka. After antagonizing the dog he would then attempt to letterbox his pamphlet. He was never bitten to the bone as claimed and no medical report was ever forthcoming. Sometime later Brian Casey apologized to Shane Stone and admitted he had been put up to the stunt by a Labor MLA.  He realized after the event had he continued with his complaint Sharka may have been put down and that was never his intention, This was typical of the Labor Party stunts played out against their political opponents - not much has changed.
