NQLIRA on the job

From 25 January 2019 to 14 February 2019 a monsoon trough over North and North West Queensland delivered 12 days of continuous, heavy rain, smashing rainfall records. It created a body of water more than 15,000 square kilometres, over 700 kilometres in length and travelling at speed. The convergence of the mighty rivers of the north was devastating. Widespread livestock losses in the hundreds of thousands, crop losses, business flooding and home inundation were reported in an area larger than the size of Victoria. The North Queensland Livestock Industry Recovery Agency (NQLIRA) was announced by Prime Minister Scott Morrison on 1 March 2019 headed by Shane Stone to assist with the immediate response, recovery and reconstruction efforts in communities affected by heavy rainfall and wide-spread flooding. It wasn't just about livestock. The task assigned to NQLIRA is vast ranging from the Northern Territory border to the Queensland coast. The staff of NQLIRA and their Queensland state colleagues in QRIDA have traversed great distances in some of the most remote parts of the State predominantly by road. From cattle stations, roadhouses, towns and the City of Townsville to some of the most spectacular remote landscape on offer in Australia. Included was the Gulf Country around Boodjamulla (Lawn Hill) National Park Locality map that highlights a number of the communities visited as the Agency went about the task  - Normanton, Karumba, Burke and Wills, Gregory Downs, Burketown, Adels Grove, Lawn Hill, Julia Creek, Mt Isa to name some.
