Letter from the Darwin Symphony Orchestra

15 February 1999

Correspondence from Associate Professor Martin Jarvis, Artistic Director and Conductor, Darwin Symphony Orchestra following the retirement of Shane Stone as Chief Minister of Australia's Northern Territory. Extensive mail, fax and telephone messages were received from the Asia Pacific region, throughout the Territory and from Australia wide, hence, a small selection of the correspondence has been included in the archives. Extract: ''I am writing to express my sincere thanks for the support and commitment you have shown to the DSO during your ministerial term in the NT government. While in office your government's contribution to the growth and development of the orchestra was significant and I appreciated your accessibility in matters of importance to the DSO''. Shane Stone held the Arts Ministry for near on 9 years including as Chief Minister. A very strong advocate for the DSO as the Federal President of the Liberal Party he successfully campaigned to persuade the Howard Government to fund the DSO for the first time. See Archive Documents 'Letter of congratulations from Ian Kew, DSO and Order of Australia'. Shane Stone responded May 4.
