Letter from Senator the Hon Eric Abetz

15 February 1999

Correspondence from the Honourable Senator Eric Abetz, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Defence following the retirement of Shane Stone as Chief Minister of Australia's Northern Territory. Extensive mail, fax and telephone messages were received from the Asia Pacific region, throughout the Territory and from Australia wide, hence, a small selection of the correspondence has been included in the archives. Extract: ''It is never an easy task to decide when the right time is to depart these roles, but I commend you for electing smooth transition for the sake of the Country Liberal Party, your Ministerial and Parliamentary colleagues, and all Territorians. During your term as Chief Minister, you have achieved a great deal for the Northern Territory for which you can be proud, most notable in my mind is the excellent relationship you have developed with our regional neighbours''. Senator Abetz's letter was notable in two respects; he was one of the few to acknowledge Josephine and second, he praised the transition. Shane Stone was no ''miserable ghost'' lurking around in the background.
