Letter from Senator Nick Minchin

18 February 1999

Correspondence from Senator the Honourable Nick Minchin, Minister for Industry, Science and Resources following the retirement of Shane Stone as Chief Minister of Australia's Northern Territory. Extensive mail, fax and telephone messages were received from throughout the Territory and from Australia wide, hence, a small selection of the correspondence has been included in the archives. Extract: ''You leave the job with a strong legacy. Over your term, the Territory punched above its weight - you were always heard on issues that mattered to Territorians. I share your enthusiasm for the Darwin - Alice Springs Railway and admire your drive on making it a national priority...you focused the Territory squarely on its major asset - being the crossroads intersecting Australia and Asia''. Also special recognition of the role Shane Stone played in resolved Native Title issues following on from the Mabo decision. Prime Minister John Howard wrote in similar terms.
