Letter from Permanent Secretary (Policy and Administration) Ministry of Defence, Brunei

17 February 1999

Correspondence from Dato Paduka Mohd Alimin ABD Wahab, Permanent Secretary (Policy and Administration) Ministry of Defence, Brunei following the retirement of Shane Stone as Chief Minister of Australia's Northern Territory. Extensive mail, fax and telephone messages were received from throughout the Asia Pacific region, the Territory and from Australia wide, hence, a small selection of the correspondence has been included in the archives. Extract: ''It has been an honour and privilege to have been associated with you all these years. May I and my wife take this opportunity to wish Josephine a very Happy Birthday and many many happy returns''. The Northern Territory has long enjoyed a close relationship with Brunei and Chief Minister Stone had a close personal working relationship with HM the Sultan of Brunei which is evident from the Archives on this website. The exchange of correspondence underscored the close personal relationships that had been forged by Shane Stone throughout the region over many years. Unfortunately, the transition from Stone to Burke was mishandled and the Territory lost many of the regional threads that have now been long compromised and lost over successive Governments.
