Letter from the Governor of East Kalimantan

2 March 1999

Correspondence from Myjen Purn TNI H. Suwarno AF, Governor East Kalimantan, following the retirement of Shane Stone as Chief Minister of Australia's Northern Territory. Extensive mail, fax and telephone messages were received from the Asia Pacific region, throughout the Territory and from Australia wide, hence, a small selection of the correspondence has been included in the archives. As the Northern Territory Minister for Education & Training Shane Stone had direct responsibility for the IATVEP - AudAid funded vocational education and training program running in 5 Eastern Provinces of Indonesia in the early 1990's including East Kalimantan (also known as North Borneo). Later as Australia's first Minister for Asian Relations & Trade and as Chief Minister Shane Stone travelled the Republic of Indonesia extensively. The Northern Territory enjoyed an unrivalled profile throughout Indonesia which led to investment, trade and education of Indonesia students at Territory schools and enrolments at NTU. Post Parliament Shane Stone served on the Board of PT Thiess Indonesia where the company's mine contracting activity was in East Kalimantan.
