Letter from Kon Vatskalis

Correspondence of congratulations from the Mr Kon Vatskalis, following the very successful 1997 General Election campaign that saw the return of the Stone CLP Government. Extensive mail, fax and telephone messages were received from throughout the Territory and from Australia wide following the resounding election victory, hence, a small selection of the correspondence has been included in the archives. See also Archive Documents 'General Election 1997 analysis' (which represented a high water mark for the CLP with a 54.7% primary vote and a record turn out). It is a matter of record that Shane Stone had a very big following in the Greek and Cypriot communities in the Northern Territory, a fact referred to in the correspondence from Vatskalis, who went onto to defeat CLP Member Peter Adamson in the 2001 General Election as an ALP candidate with a massive 13% swing. Adamson's role in Shane Stone's retirement had been widely circulated throughout the electorate and promulgated in the Greek community through Greek radio and newsletters (Kon Vatskalis hosted a Greek community radio show). Vatskalis served as a Minister in the Martin and Henderson Labor Governments before retiring undefeated in 2014. He was subsequently elected Lord Mayor of Darwin in September 2017.
