Fax from Peter Adamson

27 August 1997

Facsimile from Peter Adamson, CLP Member for Casuarina, pledging support for the re-election of the CLP Government in the forthcoming General election. The fax was not solicited or requested but gratefully received by Chief Minister Stone at the time. Archive Documents 'General Election 1997 analysis' (which represented a high water mark for the CLP with a 54.7% primary vote and a record turn out). Extract: ''I believe you have demonstrated the vision and leadership that will ensure us victory on Saturday''. Adamson went onto to hold his marginal seat of Casuarina defeating high profile candidate Clare Martin with the active support and on the ground campaigning of Shane Stone; within 18 months from within the Stone Ministry he was plotting the overthrow of the Chief Minister. In secret, whilst the Chief Minister was interstate promoting the Territory gas industry, Adamson drafted a letter of want of Confidence and solicited signatures. He was the first to sign. Peter Adamson lost his seat at the 2001 General election and following a short stint as Lord Mayor of Darwin was imprisoned for dishonesty offences. The sentencing Judge described Adamson as ''a sociopathic liar''.
