Letter from Islamic Society of the NT

31 August 1997

Correspondence of congratulations from Muhammad Huq, President Islamic Society of the Northern Territory, following the very successful 1997 General Election campaign that saw the return of the Stone CLP Government (referenced ''the only poll that counts''). Extensive mail, fax and telephone messages were received from throughout the Territory and from Australia wide following the resounding election victory, hence, a small selection of the correspondence has been included in the archives. See also Archive Documents 'General Election 1997 analysis' (which represented a high water mark for the CLP with a 54.7% primary vote and a record turn out). On the Nomination of Shane Stone, Muhammad Huq, was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia on 26 January 2000, Australia Day. His citation read: 'For service to the community, particularly through the Islamic Society of the Northern Territory, the Australian Federation of Islamic Councils and as Imam of the Darwin Muslim community'. He was the first of his community to be honoured with an Order of Australia.
