Letter from the Chairman of the Indonesia-Thailand-Malaysia- Regional Development Project

8 August 1996

Correspondence from His Excellency Tun Daim Zainuddin, Chairman of the Indonesia-Thailand-Malaysia- Regional Development Project. This trade grouping was separate from what would later emerge as BIMP-EAGA (Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines - East ASEAN Growth Area). As Minister for Asian Relations & Trade, Shane Stone had been at the forefront of pressing the case for NT involvement. Tun Daim Zainuddin, former Finance Minister of Malaysia was one of the most powerful individuals in ASEAN and was key to NT participation which he first opposed. Australia was not part of ASEAN so why should the Northern Territory be permitted to participate was the question. His letter following his attendance at EXPO 96 represented a major breakthrough - ''moving in the right direction'', indeed.
