Transcript of Denis Burke's first media conference as Chief Minister. Confirmation on page 1 that Shane Stone's departure had been contemplated with the answer ''The Chief Minister (Stone) had expressed to me (Burke) sometime ago that he did intend to leave at some stage..". Shane Stone had been in discussion with Burke from late 1998 about a planned orderly transition. Regrettably that did not come to pass and what could have been a smooth handing over of the baton was botched by the rapacious ambition of others desperate to secure their place in Government. Most lost their seats and their careers at the following general election.
