Fax from Vaughan Lowe

31 May 1995

Fax from Dr Vaughan Lowe, Reader International Law and Fellow Corpus Christie College Cambridge and his 'compatriots' in the Lauterpacht Centre for International Law, Dale Stephens and David Humphrey ('the boys'), congratulating Shane Stone on his election as Chief Minister of Australia's Northern Territory. Extensive congratulatory mail, fax and telephone messages were received from throughout the Territory and from Australia wide following Shane Stone's election, hence, a small selection has been included in the archives.Vaughan Lowe supervised Shane Stone's participation, nowadays Emeritus Chichele Professor Vaughan Lowe QC, Oxford University. Letter from Shane Stone in response to the fax dated 1 June 1995 (an undeserved, very cursory and impersonal response on reflection). The Lauterpacht Centre for International Law, Cambridge University, encourages qualified applicants with interests in the broad field of public international law and organization to come to Cambridge as Visiting Fellows. Shane Stone was the first member of the Royal Australian Navy (as a reservist), to take up such an opportunity in the first half of 1995; the sole condition imposed by the Australian Department of Defence was that he had to pay his own way (his glowing Report to Naval superiors ensured that the next Australian participant was a 2 star admiral all expenses paid). Shane Stone arranged a brief sabbatical from the Legislative Assembly of the Northern Territory to facilitate his participation and took a leave of absence from the Perron Ministry.
