Letter from Margaret Lyons

26 July 1995

Correspondence from Mrs Margaret Lyons to Chief Minister Shane Stone following her defeat as the CLP candidate in the Fannie Bay by-election following the retirement of Marshall Perron. The seat was lost on the narrowest of margins to Clare Martin who would go onto to become the first woman elected as Chief Minister and first Labor head of government ending 27 years of continuous CLP administration. Extract: ''While I believe that you and I have always had an extraordinarily good working relationship, as my mother and father always said to me 'you never know someone until you work within close quarters with them'. In the case of the Fannie Bay By-Election it would be fair to say that in working with you, my respect for your abilities, and as a politician your sense of loyalty and dedication to duty made me appreciate even more, how lucky the Northern Territory is to have have you as Chief Minister....'Thank you' does seem inadequate for what you did...:'.
