Letter from Denis Burke and first speech as Chief Minister

22 February 1999

Correspondence from Chief Minister Denis Burke enclosing his first speech to the Legislative Assembly (Eighth Assembly First Session 16/02/99 Parliamentary Record No: 14). It was commented at the time that Burke made no acknowledgement of his predecessor or previous CLP Chief Ministers. When challenged on this point he claimed to have been so advised by his staff. Elected by the Parliamentary Wing of the CLP on 8 February 1999 he was defeated at the General Election 17 August 2001. He never received a mandate in his own right and was the first CLP Chief Minister to lose Government after 27 years of continuous government.
