Arthur Phillip Esq

Arthur Phillip Esq., Captain General & Commander in Chief in and over the Territory of New South Wales, engraving by W. Sherwin from an original picture painted by F. Wheatley. Courtesy of the National Library of Australia. Captain Arthur Phillip’s arrival in Botany Bay comprised the 11 ships of the First Fleet in 1788; the founding of the settlement of Sydney and the Crown Colony of New South Wales. A maternal 6th great grandmother to Shane Stone was First Fleet Convict Ellen Wainwright alias Esther Eccles and a 6th great grandfather and Third Fleet Convict Thomas Guy (sometimes Gay), a highwayman of ‘stand and deliver fame’. Ellen arrived on board the Prince of Wales one of the first European women in New South Wales. She would later go to Norfolk Island before that settlement was abandoned and was resettled at New Norfolk near Magra in Tasmania where Ellen married Thomas Guy. The maternal Stone line of descent in Australia includes convicts from the 2nd, 3rd and 4th fleets as well as subsequent transportations. The Stone Family has a strong connection to Governor Arthur Phillip and we acknowledge and applaud his legacy.
