The Chief Minister’s Reception Canberra. Marketed as ‘Looking North, Darwin the Gateway to Asia’ the event was held at the beginning of the calendar year. The get together was targeted towards the decision makers, opinion leaders and commentators to assist the Territory in being heard and noticed in the National Capital for the right reasons; all part of developing a consciousness of the Territory given most Australians had never travelled north. The strategy was originally devised by the Everingham Government with great effect and continued up until the Burke CLP Government. Bringing together friends and supporter across the political divide, senior public servants and members of the diplomatic corps. The NT government ran an active subsidized visitation program for Heads of Mission to visit the Northern Territory. Coordinated with input from Martin Finger AO former Secretary Chief Minister & Cabinet (dating from Self Government} and Canberra lobbyist Russell Parkes, the NT Federal member and Senator. The 1998 function was held in the Federation Ballroom, Hyatt Hotel Canberra. The events included special guests including former Prime Minister Gough Whitlam.
