Former Chief Minister and member for Nightcliff Steve Hatton with Territory Olympian Ian Vander Wal (born 22 August 1971 in Darwin) an Australian former sprint and middle distance freestyle swimmer who represented Australia at the Summer Olympics in Atlanta 1996. He was a member of the 4x100-metre and 4x200-metre freestyle relay teams. He trained mainly in Brisbane. Steve Hatton had been proactive during his ministerial career in supporting and nurturing Territory sports stars. The NT Institute of Sport was established by the Stone CLP Government in 1996; the architect and driving force was Steve Hatton who served as Sports Minister in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th Stone Ministries.
