Stone Review Defeat of the Burke CLP Government

20 August 2005

Former Chief Minister and Federal President of the Liberal Party Shane Stone delivering his Review into the 2005 Northern Territory General Election that witnessed the first ever electoral defeat of the Northern Territory Country Liberal Party since its foundation as a political party. For media coverage of the Central Council where the Review was tabled and presented to CLP Parliamentary Leader Ms Jodeen Carney MLA see Documents Archives NT News 'Stone's Plans to Restructure the CLP'. The media reported a series of Recommendations to restructure a badly fractured and defeated CLP as a spring board to retake Government. The Stone Review is also available to read in Documents Archives. The CLP was subsequently re-elected in 2012 after 7 years in the political wilderness. For those interested in such matters it it worth contrasting the 2005 Review with the 2016 Review of the NT General Election. The latter Review can be found in the Documents Archives. Following the 2016 Territory election, the Country Liberals (CL) requested Scott Mitchell (former Federal Director, National Party of Australia) and Brian Loughnane (former Federal Director, Liberal Party of Australia) to undertake a review of the campaign and the events leading up to it and to make such recommendations as they believed appropriate to assist the Country Liberals in rebuilding. This latter document sets out the findings of that Review. The similarities between the 2005 and 2016 Reviews are startling and disappointing.
