Visit of the Governor-General Sir William Deane and Lady Deane to the NT Museum

6 May 1996

The Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory (MAGNT) is the premier museum in the Northern Territory. The completion of the Museum was an initiative of the first CLP Everingham Government who also appointed the foundation Director Dr Colin Jack-Hinton. The MAGNT is governed by a Board and is supported by a Foundation. Each year the MAGNT presents both internally developed exhibitions and travelling exhibitions from around Australia. It is also the home of the annual Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award (formerly Shell funded the first Award for many years). It is Australia's longest running Indigenous art prize. Permanent exhibitions are: Cyclone Tracy, the Maritime gallery, and natural sciences. The Indigenous art gallery houses one of the largest and most impressive collections in Australia. Their Excellency’s Sir William Deane AC KBE and Lady Deane expressed a desire to visit the museum where they were hosted by the Director Dr Jackie Healey and Board Chairman Mr Phil Temple.
