Shane Stone made an election promise to install traffic lights on the corner of Westralia Street and Stuart Highway Stuart Park following a number of traffic accidents at this T intersection. Also students from St John's College had to cross the Stuart Highway without the safety of a controlled crossing to access the Stuart Park shops. Campaigning for the seat of Port Darwin Shane Stone committed to the installation of traffic lights. Construction commenced in November 1996; candidates once elected must honour their election commitments or risk defeat. This was a small project but one that significantly impacted local residents - all politics is local. Official turning on of the traffic lights. Doug Gibbons, Mick Fox (CEO St Vincent de Paul) and electorate secretary Pearl Ogden.
