Chief Minister Reception NT Pacific School Games Team

Chief Minister’s Reception was held to acknowledge and support Territory students participating in the Pacific School Games Perth 14 - 15 December 1996, their parents, teachers and supporters. . The Games began as a test event for the 1982 Commonwealth Games in Brisbane. School Sport Australia took responsibility for the PSG and it has become the flagship of the Australian school sport program. Subsequent PSG have been test events for the Sydney Olympics and Commonwealth Games Melbourne using the relevant major event venues. The Pacific School Games were held in Darwin in 1992. The Games have been held in Melbourne in 1984 and 2005, Sydney in 1988 and 2000, Darwin in 1992 (27 countries were represented involving 1834 athletes including gymnastics, swimming, track & field) and Perth in 1996 (athletes from 30 Pacific Rim nations competed). Subsequent games were held in Canberra 2008; on each occasion hosted by the school sport unit in that particular state. NT Team members wearing their representative games uniforms with Chief Minister Shane Stone and Education & Training Minister Fred Finch.
