NT EXPO 1997 Labuan Delegation

Representatives of Labuan participating in NT EXPO 1997. Labuan is a federal territory of Malaysia. It is made up of Labuan Island and six smaller islands and is located off the coast of the state of Sabah in East Malaysia. The Labuan capital is Victoria and is best known as an offshore financial centre offering international financial and business services as well as being an offshore support hub for deep-water oil and gas activities in the region. The Delegation participated at the behest of Tun Daim Zainuddin, former Minister for Finance Malaysia who played an important role in accommodating the Northern Territory in the activities of BIMP – EAGA. He served as Chairman of the Northern Growth Triangle, the Labuan Development Authority and the Langkawi development Authority (off the coast of Kedah near Thailand), and also the Treasurer of the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO), the leading party in Malaysia's ruling coalition, Barisan Nasional (National Front). He was also Malaysia's representative to the East Asean Growth Area (EAGA).
