Official Visit to PNG by Chief Minister

17 December 1995

Official Visit to PNG 15 to 18 December 1995 on the invitation of then Prime Minister The Right Honourable Julius Chan MP GCMG. Accompanying Close Personal Protection (CPP) NT Police contingent comprised Sergeant Wayne Harris and Senior Constable Gino Rob (both NT Police Task Force) working in collaboration with PNG Police. Visit largely confined to Port Moresby save for a day visit to a central province in Papua. Chief Minister Stone was accompanied on the delegation by a number of individuals and groups with a PNG connection including the Drum Drum dance group. Pictured are members of Drum Drum performing for the Meko villagers. This was taken during the Drum Drum, Sanguma dance and music exchange visit to PNG where Drum Drum worked at the University with staff and students for a week learning dance and music of the local people. The trip was funded and supported by a NT Government Grant. By all accounts this trip marked a significant turning point in the lives of Drum Drum members as it helped add to the foundation of their learning and knowledge enabling them to go onto become professional performers in groups that stemmed from this trip - Drum Drum and the foundation of Sunameke. Participants still perform drawing on the knowledge learnt during this time.
