NT Delegation to Greece (including Kalymnos and Islands comprising the Greek Dodecanese) and Cyprus

24 September 1995

Citizens of Kalymnos on the foreshore of Pothia waterfront awaiting arrival of the NT Delegation. A small fishing fleet had made the crossing from Kalymnos to the neighbouring port city of Kos to welcome the Delegation and bring them to Kalymnos. At that time Kalymnos did not have a functioning airport. As the fishing fleet neared dynamite was set off in the surrounding hills - 60 explosions welcomed the Delegation - it was claimed the biggest welcome ever given to visiting dignitaries. Kalymnians maintain this form of celebration in Darwin where dynamite is set off near the Greek Church to mark Easter notwithstanding it is illegal to do so.
