Rosie Kunnoth-Monks and Shane Stone Darwin Deckchair Cinema

1 September 1995

In the early 1990s, the Darwin Film Society approached Shane Stone as the Arts Minister to support an outdoor cinema at Stokes Hill. A site at Mavie Street was identified and opened in 1994. There was no lease but rather an understanding with the Perron Government that it would be short term. The development of the Waterfront precinct was already underway and soon it was time to relocate the cinema. An area in Jervois Street at the base of the Administrators residence was identified and the Deckchair Cinema relocated with the support of the Stone Government on the initiative of Shane Stone as the Arts Minister, Member for Port Darwin and Chairman of the Port Precinct. Chief Minister Shane Stone and Rosie Kunoth-Monks star of the 1955 Australian classic film 'Jedda' at the Darwin Deck Chair Cinema. A special showing of the Kelly Gang organised to coincide with the unveiling of Kormilda College students mural of large wall panels in the cinema.
