Chief Minister presenting grant Darwin Film Society

1 September 1995

Chief Minister and Arts Minister Shane Stone presenting a Grant to the Darwin Film Society in support of the Darwin Deck Chair Cinema. The Darwin Film Society was founded in 1964. In the early 1990s, the Society approached Shane Stone as the Arts Minister to support an outdoor cinema at Stokes Hill. A site at Mavie Street was identified and opened in 1994. There was no lease but rather an understanding with the Perron Government that it would be short term. The development of the Waterfront precinct was already underway and soon it was time to relocate the cinema. An area in Jervois Street at the base of the Administrators residence was identified and the Deckchair Cinema relocated with the support of the Stone Government on the initiative of Shane Stone as the Member for Port Darwin and Chairman of the Port Precinct.
