Visit of President Ramos of the Philippines to NT

Visit of His Excellency President Fidel ‘Eddie’ Valdez Ramos (popularly known as FVR) and First Lady Amelita ‘Ming’ Martinez-Ramos of the Philippines to Darwin on 23 August 1995. Ramos was the 12th President of the Philippines from 1992-1998. Ramos served in the Cabinet of President Corazon Aquino as Chief-of-Staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), later Chief of Integrated National Police, and thereafter as Secretary of National Defence from 1986-1991. Ramos was widely credited with revitalizing and renewing international confidence in the Philippine economy. The visit to Darwin was at the invitation of Chief Minister Stone to witness the historic Memorandum of Association between the Philippines and the Northern Territory leveraged from the BIMP-EAGA engagement. Filipino Australians traveled from throughout the NT to hear President Ramos address the Legislative Assembly – a first for an Asian Head of State to address an Australian Parliament.
