South Sulawesi (Indonesian: Sulawesi Selatan) is a Province of Indonesia located on the western side of the southern peninsula of Sulawesi. The Selayar Islands archipelago is part of the province. The capital Makassar is a major regional center and the largest city on the island. For centuries Makassar is home to the buccaneering Bugis, master shipbuilders whose elegant pinisi schooners can be seen in many harbours of Indonesia. Fearless sailors roamed as far as Australia including what is now the Northern Territory and Madagascar long before their history was recorded.
