Opening Macarthur River Mine

MIM Holdings formed a joint venture in 1992-93 with Japanese consortium ANT Minerals comprising Nippon, Mitsui and Marubeni. A full feasibility study was completed and the decision made to proceed with the project. McArthur River Mining Pty Ltd was formed to operate the mine on behalf of the joint venture partners. In November 1993 the McArthur River Project Agreement Ratification Act was passed by the NT Government and commercial operations with an underground mine and processing plant began in 1995. The mine was jointly opened by Prime Minister Paul Keating and Chief Minister Shane Stone.
