Marking Independence Day Republic of Indonesia in Darwin with Indonesian community members. Front row Minister Poole, Administrator Austin Asche and Chief Minister Stone, Back row Vice Consul, Consul of Indonesia Surono Widodo, Lord Mayor George Brown, Dr. Val Asche and Mrs. Brown. The Proclamation of Indonesian Independence (Proklamasi Kemerdekaan Indonesia, or simply Proklamasi) was read at 10.00 am Friday 17 August 1945. The Declaration marked the start of the diplomatic and armed-resistance against the forces the Netherlands. Australia was amongst the first to recognise Indonesian independence.
