Marking Independence Day Republic of Indonesia in Darwin 1996. Chief Minister Stone and Consul of Indonesia in Darwin proposing the toasts. The Proclamation of Indonesian Independence (Proklamasi Kemerdekaan Indonesia, or simply Proklamasi) was read at 10.00 am Friday 17 August 1945. The Declaration marked the start of the diplomatic and armed-resistance against the forces the Netherlands. Australia was amongst the first to recognise Indonesian independence.
