In July 1960 he was elected to the House of Representatives which, in turn elected him as its first President. He held this position until 22 July 1976. In 1976 he founded the centre right wing Democratic Party (Demokratikos Synagermos). He was a candidate for the Presidency of Cyprus 6 times and elected to two 5 year terms, in 1993 and in 1998.
