Letter from former Magistrate Denis Barritt

29 May 1995

Correspondence from former Northern Territory Magistrate Mr Denis Barritt addressed to Shane, Josie and Jack following the election of Shane Stone as the Chief Minister of Australia's Northern Territory. Extensive congratulatory mail, fax and telephone messages were received from throughout the Territory and from Australia wide following Shane Stone's election, hence, a small selection has been included in the archives. Denis Barritt was an Alice Springs based Magistrate and Coroner, a former Victorian Policeman who went to the Victorian Bar before his Territory appointment on Self Government. A passionate Territorian made famous for many reasons including the Lindy Chamberlain Coronial Inquiry - 'Dinny' was a legend. Extract: ''I have no doubt you will bring to this new office qualities and abilities that have not been readily apparent in any former holders of this office. I wish you every success knowing that the ability you have demonstrated whilst exercising the duties associated with your former ministerial duties provide you with the experience to confidentially undertake your new tasks...I am sure future historians will refer to your years of office as Chief Minister as a period of great growth and development in the Territory...To you Josephine and Jack, your sacrifices in the past to help Shane mean that you are now entitled to also bask in his glory....I could not be happier''. Awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia, Queen’s Birthday 1993. Citation read: ‘In recognition of service to the community and the law’. See Archive Documents 'Dinny Barritt OAM Tribute'.
